Where do I complain if the bureau and lender don’t fix my report?

In short: Go up a ladder with three rungs. First, dispute the entry with the credit bureau, which must resolve it within 30 days (₹100 a day is owed if it is late). If it still isn’t fixed, complain in writing to the lender and the bureau through their own grievance channels. If either doesn’t reply within 30 days, or you are unhappy with the reply, take it to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in within 90 days. The Ombudsman scheme covers credit bureaus, banks and NBFCs with assets of ₹100 crore or more, and it is free.

The complaint ladder, step by step

Three steps, each with a clock

Step 1 Day 0 Raise a dispute with the credit bureau Lender has 21 days, bureau 9: resolved within 30 days Late? You are owed ₹100 per calendar day of delay Step 2 If not fixed Complain in writing to the lender and the bureau Use their grievance channel; quote your dispute number Each has 30 days to reply before you escalate Step 3 After 30 days Complain to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman If there is no reply in 30 days, or you are unhappy with it File within 90 days at cms.rbi.org.in or crpc@rbi.org.in

The 90 days run from the entity’s final reply, or from the day its 30-day deadline passed without one. Under the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme 2026, in force from 1 July 2026.

What most people get wrong: they go straight to the Ombudsman, or to a paid “credit repair” agent, to save time. The Ombudsman generally needs you to have complained to the entity first, so skipping that step slows you down. And no agent can do anything you can’t do yourself for free. Why paying an agent doesn’t help.

Build a file the Ombudsman can act on

Ombudsman complaints are decided on documents. The clearer your file, the faster it moves. Keep everything from your very first dispute.

The Ombudsman can direct the entity to correct your record, and can award compensation for proven financial loss of up to ₹30 lakh, plus up to ₹3 lakh for harassment and loss of time. Most credit-report cases, though, are about getting the entry fixed quickly. More on how the scheme works: the RBI Integrated Ombudsman and your credit report.

Frequently asked questions

Can I complain to the RBI about my CIBIL report?

Yes, through the RBI Integrated Ombudsman, which covers credit bureaus. Complain to the bureau and the lender first, then escalate if there is no reply in 30 days or you are unhappy with it.

How long do I have to go to the Ombudsman?

File within 90 days of the entity’s final reply, or of the 30-day reply deadline passing without one.

Does it cost anything to complain to the Ombudsman?

No. You can file free at cms.rbi.org.in or by email to crpc@rbi.org.in.

I complained before July 2026. Which rules apply?

Complaints filed before 1 July 2026 continue under the 2021 Integrated Ombudsman Scheme. New complaints fall under the 2026 scheme.

Can the Ombudsman change my score?

It can direct a bureau or lender to correct wrong data. Your score then recalculates from the corrected report. Accurate negative entries are not removed.
