Omozing Answers › Loan apps and consolidation

Does debt consolidation hurt or help my CIBIL score?

Usually a small dip first, then help, if you do it properly. The new loan application adds a hard enquiry, which causes a small, temporary dip, and a new account appears. Once each old loan is repaid in full and shows as closed, you have fewer active accounts and no more rollovers or late payments, and twelve on-time EMIs start building a clean record. Consolidation hurts if you settle the old loans for less, leave them open, or start borrowing from apps again.

What changes the answer

Closed in full, not settled

Repaying the whole outstanding shows “closed”. Paying less than owed shows “settled”, which is negative. Settled vs closed.

On-time EMIs afterwards

Payment history weighs heavily in a score; one steady EMI is easier to keep on time than four due dates.

How many applications you make

One application is a small dip. Applying to several lenders in a week creates a cluster, which hurts more.

Whether old loans were already late

Past late marks stay in the history. Consolidation stops new ones; it does not erase old ones.

New borrowing after

New app loans add enquiries and accounts, and undo the gain. How the cycle restarts.

Report accuracy

Check each old loan shows as closed. If one still shows active, dispute it with your payment proof.

An example: Nikhil’s report over a year

Nikhil is an illustrative profile, not a real customer. He takes home ₹62,000 and owes ₹85,000 across four app loans. Three appear on his credit report; one does not, which happens because not every lender behind an app reports the same way. He has extended two of the loans more than once and paid one of them 12 days late last month. He takes one consolidation loan with an illustrative EMI of about ₹8,783 for 12 months, about 14% of his take-home.

What his credit report shows, step by step

Week 0 Weeks 1–3 Months 1–6 Month 12 Small, temporary dip 1 hard enquiry 1 new loan account Old loans close Repaid in full Show as “closed” No more extensions Clean record grows One EMI, paid on time Enquiry ages Old late mark ages Loan closed 12 on-time EMIs 0 active app loans Undoes it: settling for less, leaving apps open, late EMIs, new app loans Direction only; no score points are implied. Every report and scoring model differs.

Illustrative. The EMI applies our illustrative SmartSwitch example (about ₹7,750 a month for 12 months per ₹75,000) to ₹85,000; it is not a SmartSwitch price or rate.

Lenders now report to bureaus four times a month (on the 9th, 16th, 23rd and last day), so a closure typically shows within one to two weeks. How often your score updates.

When it gets harder, and what helps

How lenders look at it

Future lenders read the report, not only the score. A history that shows several short app loans, then one loan repaid on time, tells a story of a borrower who fixed a problem. A history that shows a consolidation loan followed by fresh app loans tells the opposite. That pattern matters more than the small, temporary dip from one enquiry.

At Omozing

SmartSwitch consolidates several short-term loan-app loans into one Omozing loan with one EMI, so you deal with one lender and one due date. The money goes to your own bank account; you close each app loan and share the NOCs. A credit officer reads your full credit report, not just the score. If you want help with your credit habits afterwards, the Credit Score Booster programme helps you improve your credit habits and report; it does not promise or guarantee any particular score.

What most people get wrong: they fear the enquiry and keep rolling over app loans instead. A single enquiry is a small, temporary dip. Months of extensions, late payments and new app applications do far more lasting damage.

Frequently asked questions

Will my score drop when I take a consolidation loan?

Possibly a little, from the hard enquiry and the new account. The dip is small and temporary, and on-time EMIs afterwards matter far more.

Does consolidation remove my old late payments?

No. Accurate history stays on your report and cannot be removed for a fee; it weighs less as it ages.

Is settling app loans the same as consolidating?

No. Settling means paying less than owed and is reported as settled, a negative mark. Consolidating repays them in full so they show as closed.

How soon will the old loans show as closed?

Usually within one to two weeks, since lenders report four times a month from 1 July 2026. Check your report and dispute any loan still shown as active.
