| Question | Avalanche (highest rate first) | Snowball (smallest balance first) |
|---|---|---|
| Total interest | Lowest possible for the same monthly budget | Same or higher; the gap grows when rates differ a lot |
| First account closed | Can take many months if the costliest debt is also the biggest | Usually within weeks or a few months |
| Number of due dates | Stays high for longer | Falls quickly |
| What keeps you going | Knowing you are saving money | Seeing accounts disappear |
| Impact on credit score | Neither method helps or hurts by itself. What counts is paying every debt on time, falling card utilisation and no new borrowing. | |
| When it fits | Rates differ widely; you are steady with money | Many small debts; you need quick wins to stay on track |
If one card charges far more than the others, avalanche saves real money.
Card balances can be paid down any day. Fixed-EMI loans usually can’t be paid faster without a foreclosure charge, so they sit outside the race.
When a fixed EMI finishes, roll that amount into your target debt instead of letting it disappear into spending.
Chetan is an illustrative profile, not a real customer. He owes ₹90,000 on Card A (example rate 42% a year), ₹22,000 on Card B (36%) and ₹38,000 on Card C (30%). He also pays two fixed EMIs; the ₹3,500 two-wheeler EMI ends after month 6. He commits ₹12,000 a month to the cards, rising to ₹15,500 once the two-wheeler loan closes. Each card gets its minimum (modelled as 5% of the balance or ₹500); everything else goes to the target card. Interest is simplified to one-twelfth of the yearly rate each month.
Dots mark the month each card reaches zero; each month is 35 units wide. Illustrative example rates, not an offer.
| Result | Avalanche | Snowball |
|---|---|---|
| First card cleared | Month 11 (Card A) | Month 5 (Card B) |
| Cards still open after month 8 | 3 | 1 |
| Debt-free | Month 14 | Month 14 |
| Total card interest | ₹37,986 | ₹41,115 |
The avalanche saves Chetan ₹3,129, about 2% of what he owed. The snowball gives him his first closed card six months earlier and leaves only one card open from month 8. If he can wait ten months for a first win, avalanche is cheaper; if not, the snowball’s early wins may keep him paying.
Lenders never see your method. They see on-time payments, card balances falling against their limits and whether new borrowing has stopped. A late payment on any one debt outweighs anything the method saves.
SmartSwitch consolidates several short-term loan-app loans into one Omozing loan with one EMI, so you deal with one lender and one due date. The money goes to your own bank account; you close each app loan and share the NOCs. A credit officer reads your full credit report, not just the score.
Replace them with one EMI, or build a step-by-step plan to close them.
For the same monthly budget, yes, or equal: paying the highest rate first never costs more interest. How much it saves depends on how far apart your rates are.
Closing a small debt quickly cuts the number of due dates and gives a visible win, which helps many people keep going with the plan.
Keep paying them on time. They usually can’t be paid faster without a foreclosure charge, so aim extra money at flexible debts like cards, and add any EMI that ends to your monthly budget.
Not by itself. On-time payments, lower card utilisation and fewer new applications are what help over time.
