Is a CIBIL score of 550–599 bad? What can I do?

In short: It is weak, but it is not the end of the road. At 550–599 most banks and many NBFCs will decline an unsecured personal loan, and Omozing’s own minimum is 600, so you are just below the line where we can consider you. The good news is that the gap is often small, and the cause is usually something specific on your report: an overdue account, a recent settlement, heavy card use or a pile of small app loans. Fix the cause, keep every payment on time, and many people in this band can cross 600 within a few months.

Band labels are a general guide. Each lender sets its own cut-offs, and each bureau scores slightly differently. 550–599 is the lower half of the weak band.

What you can realistically expect at 550–599

OptionTypical position at 550–599
Bank personal loansUsually declined
NBFC personal loansMany decline; a few may offer a small amount after a very close look. Omozing’s minimum is 600
Secured credit (gold loan, loan against a fixed deposit)Often possible, because the security carries most of the risk
Secured credit cardOften possible, and useful for rebuilding. How it works
Quick app loansEasy to get, costly to roll over, and a common reason people are stuck in this band

So the real question is not “who will lend to me at 570?” but “what is holding me below 600, and how fast can I fix it?” A loan taken at any cost now can push you further down; a few months of repair can open up ordinary personal loans at far better terms.

The four usual causes, and the fix for each

An account overdue right now

The heaviest weight on your score. Pay it, or agree a plan with the lender, and get written confirmation. What DPD and SMA mean.

A recent settlement or write-off

Paying the remaining shortfall and asking the lender to update the account to “closed” helps. Settled vs closed.

Cards near their limit

Bring each card’s statement balance below about 30% of its limit. This can show within a reporting cycle or two.

Several small app loans

Many open loans and frequent enquiries signal stress. SmartSwitch can combine them into one EMI once you qualify.

What most people get wrong: they pay a “credit repair agent” to delete bad entries. Nobody can remove accurate negative information for a fee; only genuine errors can be corrected, and that is free. Why paid deletion is a myth.

A 120-day plan to get above 600

  1. Week 1: get every report

Download your free full report from CIBIL and at least one other bureau. List every account that is overdue, settled or wrong.

  2. Weeks 1–3: fix errors first

An error is the fastest win. Disputes must be resolved within 30 days. How to dispute.

  3. Weeks 2–6: stop the bleeding

Clear or regularise anything currently overdue. Don’t take a new app loan to pay an old one.

  4. Months 1–4: a clean run

Auto-debit every EMI and card bill. Lenders now report four times a month, so each on-time payment reaches your report sooner.

  5. Throughout: no new applications

Every application adds a hard enquiry. Wait until your report shows the fixes, then apply once.

Frequently asked questions

Is 580 a bad CIBIL score?

It is weak. Most lenders will decline an unsecured loan at 580, but it is close enough to 600 that fixing one or two problems on your report can make a real difference.

Can I get a personal loan with a 570 score?

It is hard with mainstream lenders, and Omozing’s minimum is 600. Secured options such as a gold loan or a loan against a fixed deposit are usually easier to get.

How long does it take to go from 570 to 620?

It depends on the cause. Fixing an error or clearing an overdue account can show within weeks; recovering from a recent settlement takes longer. No one can promise a date.

Should I take a small app loan to build my score?

Usually not at this stage. Short, costly loans that roll over often lead to late payments and more enquiries, which is what keeps people below 600. More on app loans.

Will a co-applicant help at 550–599?

A co-applicant with a stronger record helps many applications, but most lenders still look at your own report closely. At Omozing your own score needs to be 600 or more.
