Every lender runs the same basic sum, called FOIR (fixed obligations to income ratio). It is simply the share of your monthly take-home that is already promised to EMIs. Here is the sum for a ₹50,000 take-home where the lender allows 50% and you already pay a ₹5,000 EMI, perhaps on a phone or a two-wheeler.
Bars drawn to scale. An illustrative example; the FOIR limit, rate and tenure vary by lender and by your profile. Rates are examples, not an offer.
Of the inputs, the EMIs you already pay are the easiest to change. A fuller guide to FOIR.
Below, existing EMIs are shown as 0%, 10% and 20% of your take-home, so you can find the row closest to your situation.
| FOIR limit · existing EMIs | EMI room | 11%, 24 months | 11%, 36 months | 14%, 24 months | 14%, 36 months |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 40% · none | ₹20,000 | ₹4,29,000 | ₹6,10,000 | ₹4,16,000 | ₹5,85,000 |
| 40% · ₹5,000 (10%) | ₹15,000 | ₹3,21,000 | ₹4,58,000 | ₹3,12,000 | ₹4,38,000 |
| 40% · ₹10,000 (20%) | ₹10,000 | ₹2,14,000 | ₹3,05,000 | ₹2,08,000 | ₹2,92,000 |
| 50% · none | ₹25,000 | ₹5,36,000 | ₹7,63,000 | ₹5,20,000 | ₹7,31,000 |
| 50% · ₹5,000 (10%) | ₹20,000 | ₹4,29,000 | ₹6,10,000 | ₹4,16,000 | ₹5,85,000 |
| 50% · ₹10,000 (20%) | ₹15,000 | ₹3,21,000 | ₹4,58,000 | ₹3,12,000 | ₹4,38,000 |
Illustrative assumptions: FOIR of 40% or 50% of take-home; example rates of 11% and 14% a year (not an offer; Omozing’s rates start from 11% a year); tenures of 24 and 36 months. Rounded down to the nearest ₹1,000. Actual amounts depend on a full credit assessment.
Notice the overlap: a lender using 50% with your ₹5,000 EMI lands on exactly the same figure as a lender using 40% with no EMI. To see how the grid stretches as pay rises, compare the ₹60,000 salary grid or every band on our personal loan by salary page.
For many people on ₹50,000, a personal loan of several lakh is the largest debt they have taken so far. The EMI will sit next to rent, groceries, family support and savings for the next two or three years. Here is what common first-loan sizes look like at 11% a year:
| Loan | EMI, 24 months | Share of ₹50,000 | EMI, 36 months | Share of ₹50,000 | Extra interest for the longer tenure |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹3 lakh | ₹13,982 | 28.0% | ₹9,822 | 19.6% | ₹18,002 |
| ₹4 lakh | ₹18,643 | 37.3% | ₹13,095 | 26.2% | ₹24,003 |
| ₹5 lakh | ₹23,304 | 46.6% | ₹16,369 | 32.7% | ₹30,003 |
Example rate of 11% a year, not an offer. Assumes no other EMIs.
A ₹5 lakh loan over 24 months is allowed by many lenders, but it leaves under ₹27,000 for everything else. The same loan over 36 months, or ₹4 lakh over 24 months, keeps you nearer a third of your pay, which is a level most people can hold through an unexpected bill.

Quotes, fees, a small buffer. Borrowing ₹1 lakh extra “just in case” costs you interest for the whole tenure.
At Omozing it is 3%–7% plus GST, usually deducted at disbursal. On ₹4 lakh, a 3% fee is ₹12,000 plus ₹2,160 GST, so ₹3,85,840 reaches your account.
It shows the APR, which combines interest and fees, before you sign. Compare lenders on APR, not the headline rate.
You are above Omozing’s ₹40,000 minimum. Salaried, credit score from 600, loans up to ₹25 lakh over 3–36 months, two documents, and rates that start from 11% a year.
Often yes, if your other EMIs are small. With no other EMIs, ₹5 lakh sits within the illustrative range at both 40% and 50% FOIR over 36 months, and its EMI at 11% is about ₹16,369.
Unlikely on your income alone. Even at 50% FOIR, 11% and 36 months with no other EMIs, the illustrative maximum is about ₹7.63 lakh; a co-applicant’s income can raise it.
A short credit history is not a problem in itself if your score is from 600 and your income is steady. Lenders read your full report, including any cards or small loans you already repay.
Choose the shortest tenure whose EMI still leaves you comfortable. On ₹4 lakh at 11%, 24 months saves about ₹24,000 in interest but adds about ₹5,500 to the monthly EMI.
Usually take-home, the amount credited to your salary account each month, which they read from your bank statement and salary slip.
