This story follows Meghna, 34, a salaried borrower applying for a personal loan. She is illustrative: her name, her report and every number on it are made up. The notes are the kind of questions a credit officer asks, written as principles, not any lender’s rules.
Meghna’s sample report shows a score of 712, dated 15 October 2026. The score is a summary. Each of the four credit bureaus in India (TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark) calculates its own score on a 300 to 900 scale, so the number can differ between them. Check the report date: from 1 July 2026 lenders report to bureaus four times a month, so an old report goes stale quickly. Then check the personal information: is the name, date of birth and PAN yours? A wrong PAN can pull someone else’s loans onto your report.
Meghna has four accounts: a two-wheeler loan (secured, closed in 2024, repaid in full), a personal loan (unsecured, open, ₹2,00,000 sanctioned and ₹1,18,000 still to repay), a credit card (unsecured, open, ₹1,50,000 limit and ₹1,08,000 balance) and a short-term loan (unsecured, settled in 2023). A secured loan is backed by something, like the bike; an unsecured one is backed only by your promise to repay. Both are normal. A lender looks at what kinds of credit you have handled, how much is still open, and how each one went. The EMI on an open loan counts against your take-home pay before any new loan.
Each account has a month-by-month payment grid, newest month first. 000 (or STD) means paid on time. 030 means 30 days past due; 060 means 60 days past due. XXX means nothing was reported for that month; it is not a late mark by itself. Meghna’s personal loan shows 030 in February, 060 in March and 030 in April, then on time every month since May. Today it shows “Overdue ₹0”, but the grid keeps the history, so a lender will ask what happened and whether it is fixed. DPD means days past due. Lenders group overdue loans as SMA-0 (1 to 30 days), SMA-1 (31 to 60) and SMA-2 (61 to 90); beyond 90 days a loan is an NPA. Read more: what DPD and SMA mean.
“Closed” means the loan was paid in full, as agreed. “Settled” means the borrower paid less than owed and the lender accepted the rest as a loss. Meghna’s short-term loan shows ₹26,500 owed and settled for ₹18,000 in 2023, a shortfall of ₹8,500. A settled status is negative and stays visible for years; “written off” means the lender booked a loss, and is also negative. What helps: pay the shortfall and ask the lender to update the status to “Closed”. To be fair, a settlement from 2023 with a clean record since reads very differently from a fresh one. Read more: settled vs closed.
Meghna’s report shows one personal loan enquiry in March 2026, then five between 18 September and 2 October 2026: four personal loans and one credit card. Each loan or card application adds a hard enquiry, which causes a small, temporary dip; a cluster weighs more, and a lender will ask whether she was shopping around or being turned down. Checking your own report is a soft enquiry and does not affect your score. If you see an enquiry you did not make, dispute it: it can be an early sign that someone is using your details.
Meghna’s card has a ₹1,50,000 limit and a ₹1,08,000 balance, so 72% of the limit is in use. The statement balance is usually what is reported, and the usual guide is to keep card use under about 30% of the limit. A lender will ask whether the card is carrying monthly expenses. In the story you can enter your own card limit and statement balance to see your utilisation; at the default ₹40,000 on a ₹1,00,000 limit it is 40%, and under 30% would mean a balance below ₹30,000. Read more: why 30% matters.
A lender would ask Meghna about four things: the late payments from February to April (what happened, and is it fixed?), the settled loan (why, and was the shortfall later paid?), the five applications in two weeks (why so many, so fast?) and the 72% card use (is the card carrying monthly bills?). Two lines are not worries on their own: the two-wheeler loan closed in full, and the XXX month when nothing was reported. None of these is a verdict on its own. A lender reads the pattern, how recent it is and what you can show now. At Omozing, a credit officer reads your full credit report, not just the score.

They are monthly entries in the payment history (DPD, days past due). 000 or STD means paid on time, 030 means 30 days past due, 060 means 60 days past due, and XXX means nothing was reported for that month.
Closed means the loan was repaid in full as agreed. Settled means you paid less than you owed and the lender accepted the rest as a loss. Settled is negative and stays visible for years; paying the shortfall and asking the lender to update the status to “Closed” helps.
Applications create hard enquiries, which cause a small, temporary dip, and several in a short time weigh more. Checking your own score or report is a soft enquiry and does not affect it.
The usual guide is to keep card use under about 30% of the limit. The statement balance is usually what is reported, so paying down before the statement date helps keep the reported figure low.
No. Accurate negative information cannot be removed by anyone for a fee. Only errors can be corrected, and disputes are free and must be resolved within 30 days.
