Low Credit Score in India: 8 Symptoms, Their Causes and the Fix for Each

Table of Contents

In short: A low credit score usually announces itself before you ever check it: loan rejections, offers at unusually high rates, smaller card limits, lenders asking for a co-applicant or collateral, or only payday-style apps saying yes. Each symptom points to a likely cause in your credit report, such as late payments, maxed-out cards, too many applications, a settled loan or an error. Match the symptom to the cause, pull your free report to confirm it, and apply the specific fix rather than generic advice.

This guide is a diagnostic: it starts from what you are experiencing and works back to the cause. If you want the full theory of what a low score means, read what a low CIBIL score means; for every factor in detail, see 11 factors that lead to a low CIBIL score.

Eight symptoms of a low credit score

Credit scores in India run from 300 to 900 across all four bureaus (TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark). Most banks are comfortable well above 700; below about 650, the symptoms start to show. Tick the ones that sound familiar.

  • Rejections without a clear reason. A bank declines your personal loan or card and only says “internal policy”.
  • Approval, but at a much higher rate. A colleague with similar pay was offered far better terms.
  • Smaller amounts than you asked for. You applied for ₹3 lakh and were offered ₹1 lakh.
  • Requests for a co-applicant, guarantor or collateral on a loan that is normally unsecured.
  • Credit-card limit cuts or pre-approved offers that suddenly stop arriving.
  • Only instant-loan apps say yes, and they offer 7–30 day loans with heavy fees.
  • Rental or job background checks raise questions about your credit history.
  • Recovery calls or messages about an account you thought was closed.

Two or more ticks? Don’t guess. Pull your report this week and find the exact line causing it.

How to confirm the cause in 20 minutes

Get the report. You are entitled to one free full credit report from each bureau every calendar year. Start with the one your lender used, often CIBIL. Our free credit score guide shows where.
Scan payment history. Look for anything other than “000” or “STD” in the monthly grid: DPD numbers like 030 or 090, or “SUB”, “DBT” or “LSS”.
Check account status. “Settled”, “written off” or an open account you closed are red flags.
Count enquiries. Several in the last six months suggests you have been shopping hard for credit.
Add up utilisation. Total card balances divided by total card limits. Above about 30% hurts; near 100% hurts a lot.

The causes, ranked by how often we see them

When our credit officers read reports from salaried applicants with scores between 600 and 700, the same few patterns come up repeatedly. These are qualitative observations, not a statistical study:

  1. Recent late payments

Even one 30-day delay on a credit card or EMI in the last year pulls a score down sharply. Repeated delays, or anything 90+ days, do more damage. If cheques or auto-debits bounced, read how a cheque bounce affects your CIBIL.

  2. Maxed-out cards

Running cards close to their limit signals dependence on credit, even if you pay the minimum on time.

  3. Stacked app loans and enquiries

A run of small loan-app loans, each with a hard enquiry, and sometimes a missed 7-day repayment. See how multiple loans affect your score.

  4. Settlements and write-offs

Paying less than the full amount stays visible for years. Our write-off guide covers what you can do.

  5. Report errors and identity misuse

Loans that aren’t yours, duplicates, or closed loans still open. These are the fastest to fix because they are not your behaviour.

How quickly each fix can show up

Indicative time for a fix to be reflected in your score

Error corrected1–2 months Card use lowered1–2 months Enquiries fadeabout 12 months Late payments12–24 months Settled / written off36+ mo

Bar length is proportional to the upper end of each range (36 months shown as the cap). These are indicative ranges, assuming no new negatives; lenders report monthly, and no one can promise a particular score by a particular date.

The lesson: fix errors and utilisation first because they move fastest, and start the clock on clean payments immediately, because that is the slow part. For a 30–60 day plan, see how to raise your CIBIL score quickly.

Remedies that make it worse

Applying everywhere

Each rejection adds an enquiry. Five applications in a month can deepen the very symptom you are trying to cure.

Paying “score repair” agents upfront

No one can delete accurate negatives. You can dispute errors yourself for free.

Using new app loans to repay old ones

Rollovers multiply fees fast. Read how payday rollovers work before you take another.

Closing your oldest card

It shortens your history and can raise utilisation. Keep it open and use it lightly.

If you need to borrow while you fix it

A low score narrows your options; it doesn’t always end them. Omozing, a brand of RBI-registered NBFC Aparampaar Finance, lends to salaried people with a credit score from 600 and a take-home salary of ₹40,000 or more, and a credit officer reads the full report rather than rejecting on the number alone. If your main symptom is a pile of short-term app loans, SmartSwitch replaces them with one EMI so the missed-payment cycle stops.

Frequently asked questions

What is the lowest credit score in India?

Scores from TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark run from 300 to 900, so 300 is the lowest. If you have no credit history at all, CIBIL shows NA or NH (often displayed as -1) instead of a score; that means no history, not a bad history.

How do I find out why my credit score is low?

Download your full credit report, not just the score. Check the payment-history grid for days-past-due entries, account statuses such as settled or written off, the number of recent enquiries, and how much of your card limits you are using.

What is considered a bad credit score?

Lenders set their own cut-offs, but scores below about 650 generally limit you to fewer lenders and higher rates, and many banks prefer 700–750 or more. Some NBFCs, including Omozing, consider salaried applicants from 600.

Can a low credit score lead to debt collection calls?

The score itself doesn’t trigger calls; overdue accounts do. If you get recovery calls about a loan you believe is closed, ask the lender for a statement and no-dues certificate, and dispute the entry with the bureau if it is wrong.

Can identity theft cause a low credit score?

Yes. A loan taken in your name and left unpaid will damage your score. Dispute it with the bureau and the lender, and report the fraud on the cybercrime helpline 1930 or at cybercrime.gov.in.

How long does it take to fix a low credit score?

Corrected errors and lower card balances can show within one or two monthly reporting cycles. Recovering from late payments usually takes many months of on-time repayment, and settlements or write-offs fade over several years.
