What does a CIBIL score below 550 mean?

In short: It means your report shows serious repayment trouble, usually an account that is overdue right now, or one that was written off or settled in the last few years. Most lenders, including Omozing (which starts from 600), will not approve an unsecured personal loan at this level. It is not a permanent label or a blacklist. The way up starts with stopping the damage on any account that is still overdue, then adding months of clean payments on top.

Band labels are a general guide. Each lender sets its own cut-offs, and each bureau scores slightly differently.

What usually sits behind a score under 550

A thin file or high card use rarely pushes a score this low on its own. Below 550, the report almost always carries one or more of the entries below. Find yours first, because the fix depends on which it is.

What borrowing looks like in this band

Unsecured loans: mostly no

Most banks and NBFCs decline personal loans and new cards here. Omozing’s criteria start from 600, so we would ask you to rebuild first.

Secured options: sometimes

A secured credit card against a fixed deposit can help rebuild. How secured cards work.

Loan apps: costly trap

Apps that lend at this level often charge high fees on short tenures, and one missed repayment adds to the damage.

“Score repair” for a fee: avoid

No one can remove accurate negative entries for money. Only errors can be corrected, and that is free. Why paid removal is a myth.

What most people get wrong: they believe a score under 550 means they are “blacklisted” or a “wilful defaulter”. India has no blacklist; lenders read your report and decide. Wilful defaulter is a narrow legal label for people who deliberately don’t pay despite having the means, with ₹25 lakh or more outstanding. A salaried borrower who fell behind because money ran out is not one. What wilful defaulter really means.

Climbing out: the first six months

  1. Get every report

Download your free annual report from CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark. List each account that is overdue, settled or written off.

  2. Stop the active damage first

An account still overdue adds a fresh late month every cycle. Clearing it, or agreeing a plan with the lender, comes before anything else.

  3. Dispute anything wrong

Errors are corrected free. If the bureau and lender miss the 30-day deadline, you are owed ₹100 for each day of delay. How to dispute.

  4. Keep one account running perfectly

An active card or loan paid on time every month is what adds clean history on top of the old problems.

  5. Don’t apply anywhere for now

Rejections at this level add hard enquiries and make the next lender more cautious.

  6. Check the update landed

Lenders now report four times a month, so a fix usually shows within one to two weeks.

Expect the score to move in stages rather than in one jump. The old entries stay visible for years but weigh less as they age, while each clean month counts in your favour. Our guide on rebuilding after a default covers the longer road, and the 550–599 band is the next milestone.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a personal loan with a CIBIL score of 500?

It is very hard with most lenders, because unsecured loans at this level are rarely approved. Omozing starts from 600, so the realistic path is to resolve overdue accounts and rebuild first.

Am I blacklisted if my score is below 550?

No. There is no blacklist. Lenders read your credit report and decide for themselves, and your report improves as clean months build up.

Will paying off my overdue loan raise my score straight away?

It stops new damage and the update usually shows within one to two weeks, but the past late months stay on record, so the score recovers gradually.

How long does it take to get from below 550 to 650?

There is no fixed timeline. It depends on how many accounts are affected and how recent they are; steady progress usually takes many months of clean payments.

Can a credit repair agent fix a score below 550?

No one can remove accurate negative information for a fee. Errors can be corrected, and that is free through the bureau’s dispute process.
