| Entity | Covered? | Credit report example |
|---|---|---|
| Credit information companies (TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax, CRIF High Mark) | Yes | The bureau ignored your dispute or didn’t update the correction |
| Commercial banks | Yes | The bank keeps reporting a closed card as overdue |
| NBFCs with assets of ₹100 crore or more | Yes | A lender reported a loan that isn’t yours and won’t fix it |
| Non-bank prepaid payment instrument issuers | Yes | Less often about credit reports |
So you can complain about the bureau itself, for example if it sat on your dispute, as well as about the lender that reported the wrong data. Often the fix needs both: the lender corrects what it reports, and the bureau updates your file.
If your lender is a smaller NBFC, check its grievance redressal page, which should explain where to escalate. Either way, start with the lender’s own grievance officer.
Most credit report problems are fixed long before the Ombudsman stage. A dispute with the bureau must be resolved within 30 days (21 for the lender, 9 for the bureau), and if it runs late you are owed ₹100 for every day of delay, paid to the account you give within 5 working days of resolution. How that compensation works. Our dispute guide walks through raising one.
Start with a dispute. It’s free, it has a 30-day deadline, and it builds the paper trail you’ll need if you ever escalate.
Yes. Credit information companies are covered by the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme 2026. Complain to the bureau first and escalate if it doesn’t reply within 30 days or you aren’t satisfied.
Within 90 days of the final reply, or within 90 days of the 30-day deadline passing if you got no reply.
Up to ₹30 lakh for financial loss you can show, plus up to ₹3 lakh for harassment or loss of time.
